Introduction
The SEAGULL License Manager is required only if you have chosen the Concurrent User License method. Single User Licenses and Site Licenses do not require the use of the SEAGULL License Manager.
SEAGULL License Manager minimum requirements:
- Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 or Windows 2000
- Pentium 200
- 64 Megabytes of Memory (or more if required by your OS)
Scope
The scope of this QuickStart Guide is to provide the steps necessary to perform an installation and basic configuration of the SEAGULL License Manager.
Overview
The SEAGULL License Manager is a 32-bit Windows application that resides on any Windows 95, 98, Windows NT or Windows 2000 system. It’s purpose is to provide Concurrent User Licenses for the entire BlueZone family of products.
License Manager must be installed somewhere on the network that is accessible by your end users. License Manager requires very little processing power to handle thousands of client license requests. Therefore, it may be installed on the same system as the BlueZone Web-to-Host web server, SEAGULL Security Server, or any other Windows PC with excess processing resources.
NOTE If you are evaluating BlueZone Web-to-Host, you do not need to install or configure SEAGULL License Manager. BlueZone Web-to-Host does not require License Manager to operate in the "evaluation” mode.
How SEAGULL License Manager Works
The SEAGULL License Manager is programmed with a license key for the number of purchased Concurrent users. The BlueZone Concurrent applications are enabled for operation only after they have contacted the License Manager, over a TCP/IP connection, and obtained a license. Once the license is obtained, the application sends a periodic "heartbeat" to let the License Manager know it is still running. Applications that miss three heartbeats have their licenses returned to the available pool.

You may have entered the License Key incorrectly. Please double check the key to make sure that it is correct and try again.

Running the SEAGULL License Manager
The SEAGULL License Manager requires no additional configuration to operate.
Windows 95 - Windows 98
When the License Manager is installed on a Windows 95 or 98 workstation, it runs as an application. To start the License Manager, double click on the License Manager desktop icon. Once the application has been launched, the License Manager will start its initialization routine. If you exit the License Manager application, the License Manager will stop and no longer issue licenses.
NOTE It is recommended that you add the SEAGULL License Manager to your Windows StartUp Group so that Windows will automatically start the License Manager program whenever it starts up.
Reason - This way if your workstation re-starts for any reason (ie: power failure, crash, etc.), the License Manager application will automatically be started.
Windows NT Server - Windows 2000 Server
When the License Manager is installed on a Windows NT or a Windows 2000 server, it runs as a "Service". By default, the License Manager Service is set to "Automatic" so that the License Manager will automatically start-up whenever the server is re-started.
Once the License Manager service is started, the License Manager will start its initialization routine even though the License Manager Console is not running. On server installations, the License Manager Console is a separate application that does not run as a "Service".
You can open and close the License Manager Console without affecting the operation of the License Manager Service.
License Manager Initialization Routine
The License Manager initializes for two to three minutes, listening for existing clients that may still be running since the last server shutdown. Any clients that are still running are issued licenses first, then new license requests are processed.
The License Manager Console
To start the License Manager Console, simply double click on the License Manager desktop icon.
The StatusBar on the user interface indicates the number of purchased Concurrent Licenses and how many are still available. This display is updated automatically as users connect and disconnect.
Accessing the SEAGULL License Manager through a Firewall or Proxy Server
The SEAGULL License Manager allows the unlimited distribution of BlueZone emulation clients, making it ideal for public Internet use. When used over the Internet, the SEAGULL License Manager and the client must be able to communicate when firewalls or proxy servers are in place. This communication takes place over TCP/IP port 8421.
NOTE This port can be configured to another port, like port 80.
These settings must be configured in the firewall or proxy server to allow the packets to be exchanged between BlueZone and the SEAGULL License Manager. If this configuration is not in place, BlueZone clients will get an "unable to license" error.
Loss of Communication with the License Manager
If licensed BlueZone clients lose communication with the SEAGULL License Manager they will continue to operate, uninterrupted, until the communications link is reestablished.
If the loss of communication is due to a server failure, upon restart, the SEAGULL License Manager will wait three minutes to reestablish communications with the working clients to reissue those licenses prior to accepting new license requests.
If the server is working and the loss of communication with a client lasts through three client heartbeat cycles (three minutes each), the client license is revoked and added back to the pool of available licenses.
Configuring BlueZone Clients for License Manager
Now that you have the SEAGULL License Manager installed and running, the final step is configuring your BlueZone emulation clients with the IP address of the server that is running the License Manager.
To configure BlueZone to work with the License Manager, follow these steps.
- From a workstation, launch a BlueZone FTP, Mainframe, iSeries, or VT display session.
When the emulator launches, you will not be able to obtain a license nor make a host connection. You will be presented with the following message box:
- Click the Configure button and add the IP address of the SEAGULL License Manager server to the list as shown below.
NOTE If you changed your Listening Port from the default of 8421, as shown in Listening Port Option, you must add the configured port number to the end of the IP address, using a coma as a separator.
Example: 63.75.199.234,80
CAUTION! Do not use a colon (:) between the IP Address and the Port number. You must use a coma as shown above.
- Click the OK button and then click the Retry button on the License Manager Info box. You should now be able to obtain a license and connect to your host.
- On the BlueZone MenuBar, select File:Save.
- To test, close the emulator and launch it again.
Repeat this process for each BlueZone emulator that you are using.
NOTE There is no need to perform this procedure on the BlueZone printer emulators. Only the BlueZone display emulators require the SEAGULL License Manager IP address.
