How to Configure BlueZone TCP/IP Print Server to Launch Directly Into the Windows System Tray

Introduction

When distributing one or more BlueZone emulation clients along with the TCP/IP Print Server, it is possible to create an installation image that will install and launch a pre-configured TCP/IP Print Server directly into the Windows System Tray.

This is accomplished by creating a TCP/IP Print Server desktop shortcut and editing the “path” to include a configuration file name using the /F switch, followed by the /T switch, which will cause the TCP/IP Print Server to launch directly in the Windows System Tray using your pre-configured configuration file.

Requirements

This procedure requires BlueZone version 3.4 or higher.

Procedure

  1. If you haven’t already done so, install BlueZone on your desktop.
  2. Using BlueZone Session Manager, create a TCP/IP Print Server Session.
  3. NOTE If you don’t have the BlueZone Session Manager installed, you can make a desktop shortcut simply by browsing to the folder where BlueZone is installed, locating the TCP/IP program (BZLPD.EXE) highlight the file, and with your right mouse, drag the file to your desktop while selecting “Create Shortcuts Here”.

  4. Launch and configure this session to your liking.
  5. Save the session with a profile name by doing Save As.
  6. Using the BlueZone Session Manager, create a desktop shortcut for the TCP/IP Print Server session you just created.
  7. With your mouse, select the shortcut and do a right click then select properties. You will be presented with the following dialog

  1. Edit the “Target” line by adding the following text to the end of the target.
  2. /Ffilename.ztp /T  Where filename is the name of your configuration file

It should look like this when you are finished

CAUTION! Make sure you start adding your text After the double quote.

  1. If you wish, you can also change the name of the shortcut as well. This is done on the General tab.
  2. Click the OK button to save the changes.
  3. If you haven’t already done so, create a distribution image using the BlueZone Setup program.
  4. Copy the TCP/IP Print server desktop shortcut you just edited, into the distribution image folder. BlueZone Setup will automatically place this shortcut on the desktop during installation.
  5. Copy the configuration file you created from the BlueZone\Config folder into the distribution image folder. BlueZone Setup will automatically place this file into the BlueZone\Config folder during installation.
  6. Copy any other files that you might need (like the seagull.saf file or other configuration files) into your distribution image folder.
  7. Edit the SETUP.INI file with Notepad and locate the [Desktop Shortcuts] section.
  8. Change TCP/IPPrintServer=Yes to TCP/IPPrintServer=No. This will prevent BlueZone Setup from placing a “plain” desktop shortcut icon on the desktop. You want your “edited” shortcut that you created above.

Using the distribution image, test your changes on a machine where BlueZone has not been installed or has been un-installed. The BlueZone Setup program should install all the BlueZone files and place your TCP/IP Print Server desktop shortcut on the desktop.

Double click the TCP/IP Print Server shortcut, and it should launch directly into the Windows System Tray using the configuration file that you specified.

Congratulations! You have successfully completed this exercise.
